PUNISHMENT IN THE GRAVE

Narrated: Masruq
Aisha said that
a Jewess came to her and mentioned the punishment in the GRAVE,
saying to her, "May Allah protect you from the punishment of the GRAVE."
'Aisha then asked Allah's Apostle ABOUT the punishment of
the GRAVE. He said, "Yes, (there is) punishment in the GRAVE." 'Aisha added, "After that I
never saw Allah's Apostle but seeking refuge with Allah from the punishment in
the GRAVE in every prayer he prayed."

Narrated: Abu Huraira
A black man or a
black woman used to sweep the mosque and he or she died. The Prophet asked ABOUT her (or
him). He was told that she (or he) had died. He said, "Why did you not
inform me? Show me his GRAVE (or herGRAVE)."
So he went to her (or his) GRAVE and
offered her (or his) funeral prayer."

Allah's Apostle in
his fatal illness said, "Allah cursed the Jews and the Christians, for
they built the places of worship at the GRAVEs of
their prophets." And if that had not been the case, then the Prophet's GRAVE would
have been made prominent before the people. So (the Prophet ) was afraid, or
the people were afraid that his GRAVE might be
taken as a place for worship.

mother and wept, causing the people around him to weep. Then he said: ‘I asked
my Lord for permission to seek forgiveness for her, but He did not give me
permission. Then I asked my Lord for permission to visit her GRAVE and He
gave me permission. So visit the GRAVEs, for
they will remind you of death.’" Hasan

"I was present
with Ibn Umar at a funeral. When the body was placed in the niche-GRAVE) he
said, ‘Bismillah wa fi sabil-illah wa ‘ala millati rasul-illah’ (In the Name of
Allah, for the sake of Allah and according to the religion of the Messenger of
Allah). When he started to place bricks in the niche-GRAVE he said:
‘Allahumma ajirha min ash-shaitani wa min ‘adhabil-qabr. Allahumma Jafil-arda
‘an janbaiha, wa sa’id ruhaha, wa laqqiha minka ridwana (O Allah, protect him
from Satan and from the torment of the GRAVE; O
Allah, keep the earth away from his two sides and take his soul up and grant
him pleasure from Yourself).’ I said: ‘O Ibn Umar, is this something that you
heard from the Messenger of Allah (saw) or is it your own words?’ He said: ‘I
could have said something like that, but this is something that I heard from
the Messenger of Allah (saw).’" Sahih

"The leader of
the hypocrites in Al- Madinah died, and left instructions that The Prophet
(saw) should offer the funeral prayer for him and shroud him in his shirt. He
offered the funeral prayer for him and shrouded him in his shirt, and stood by
his GRAVE. Then
Allah revealed the words: ‘And never pray (the funeral prayer) for any of them
(hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his GRAVE."

Allah's Apostle
said, "When (Allah's) slave is put in his GRAVE and his
companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and
make him sit and ask, 'What did you use to say ABOUT this man
(i.e. Muhammad)?' The faithful Believer will say, 'I testify that he is Allah's
slave and His Apostle.' Then they will say to him, 'Look at your place in the
Hell Fire; Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it.' So he will
see both his places." (Qatada said, "We were informed that his GRAVE would be
made spacious." Then Qatada went back to the narration of Anas who said;)
Whereas a hypocrite or a non-believer will be asked, "What did you use to
say ABOUTthis
man." He will reply, "I do not know; but I used to say what the
people used to say." So they will say to him, "Neither did you know
nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Quran)." Then he will be
hit with iron hammers once, that he will send such a cry as everything near to
him will hear, except Jinns and human beings. (See Hadith No. 422).

A Jewess came to
ask 'Aisha (the wife of the Prophet) ABOUT something.
She said to her, "May Allah give you refuge from the punishment of the GRAVE." So 'Aisha ' asked Allah's Apostle
"Would the people be punished in theirGRAVEs?" Allah's Apostle after seeking refuge with
Allah from the punishment of the GRAVE (and
thus replied in the affirmative). Then one day, Allah's Apostle rode to go to
some place but the sun eclipsed. He returned in the forenoon and passed through
the rear of the dwellings (of his wives) and stood for the (eclipse) prayer,
and the people stood behind him. He stood up for a long period and then
performed a prolonged bowing which was shorter than the first bowing. Then he
raised his head and prostrated. Then he stood up (for the second Raka) for a
long while but the standing was shorter than that of the first Raka. Then he
performed a prolonged bowing which was shorter than the first one. Then he
raised his head and prostrated. Then he stood up for a long time but shorter
than the first. Then he performed a prolonged bowing but shorter than the
first. Then he raised his head and prostrated and finished the prayer and (then
delivered the sermon and) said as much as Allah wished. And then he ordered the
people to seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the GRAVE.

father said: "A Bedouin came to The Prophet (saw) and said: ‘O Messenger
of Allah, my father used to uphold the ties of kinship, and so and so forth,
where is he?’ He said: ‘In the Fire.’ It was as if he found that difficult to
bear. Then he said: ‘O Messenger of Allah. Where is your father?’ The Messenger
of Allah (saw) said: ‘Whenever you pass by the GRAVE of an
idolater, give him the tidings of Hell-fire.’ The Bedouin later became Muslim,
and he said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (saw) gave me a difficult task. I never
passed the GRAVE of an
idolater but I gave him the tidings of Hell-fire.’" Sahih

they had seen in Ethiopia in which there were pictures. They told the Prophet ABOUT it, on
which he said, "If any religious man dies amongst those people they would
build a place of worship at his GRAVE and make
these pictures in it. They will be the worst creature in the sight of Allah on
the Day of Resurrection."

Yahya related to me
from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam from Ata ibn Yasar that the Messenger of Allah,

that is worshipped. The anger on those who took the GRAVEs of their Prophets as places of prostration was
terrible."

That Umm Habibah
and Umm Salamah mentioned a church that they had seen in Ethiopia, in which
there were images. The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “Those people, if there
was a righteous man among them, when he died they built a place of worship over
his GRAVE and made
those images. They will be the most evil of creation before Allah on the Day of
Resurrection.” (Sahih)
